Activities for Algebra I with the TI-73
by Rachel Newman-Turner and Robert Goodman
This collection of activities is intended to provide middle and high school Algebra I students with a set of data collection investigations that integrate mathematics and science and promote mathematical understanding. The use of the TI-73 is an integral part of each activity. The activities are designed to be used in a mathematics classroom and require a minimum of equipment, setup, and materials. They are well suited to environments where collaborative teams of mathematics and science teachers plan interdisciplinary lessons. Each activity is based on a real-world problem situation and incorporates modeling of realistic data that encourages exploration of mathematical relationships and "what if" investigations. Many of the activities are intended for students working in groups of four or fewer.
These activities use technology to represent data graphically, explore patterns, and model the data. They also use technology to assist students in analyzing and interpreting the data in order to make decisions. The activities are keystroke-intensive and can be used by teachers and students whose technology skills range from beginner to advanced ability. They are designed to stand alone, and can be done in any order. The length of time for the completion of each activity ranges from approximately 45 minutes to 120 minutes.
